DMD Construction Ltd, a Fort William based building contractor has been working on a new extension for Mallaig pool and leisure centre in the Scottish Highlands. The extension was built to create a café space within the leisure centre. Seven Glulam frames were supplied to the project by our Buckhaven site.
The frames were supplied to match the existing theme of the swimming pool within the leisure centre. The new compact cafe space is part of ongoing renovation works to the leisure centre and will seat around 20 people (when social distancing is relaxed). The extension is all glass to let in lots of natural light, and this, coupled with the striking glulam frames is a perfect space for customers to relax in after a swim or workout.
Glulam was specified for this project, because not only does it look striking & beautiful, it can be manufactured in large chunky section sizes, which not only look good but are also structurally very strong. These frames will be a standout feature in the frequently used community building.

This project was straightforward for the team at DTE, as there was good set of engineering drawings provided by the client and therefore, it was more about getting the correct products to site on time, rather than carrying out any complex design work. The site, however, was in a remote location in the Scottish Highlands, meaning that everything had to be triple checked before it left our site. Through good communication with the client, this was achieved, and the frames arrived safely and on time.
